I’ve talked about TIME before, but today I’m talking more about TIMING.
How to determine if the timing for something is right?
We must analyze opportunities to determine if they are right for us both personally and professionally. When is it the right time to get married? When is the right time to have kids? These are big life changes that could certainly throw us overboard if we go deep enough. For me, I’m thankful I’m more of a hold my breath and jump kind of girl. However, from a professional perspective, while I do listen to my gut, I believe there’s some additional consideration that can take place to help you figure out if the timing is right.
Whether you want to start a new job, consider an opportunity, or go back to school… Whatever the case may be here are some questions to ask yourself to help you with this consideration:
1- How does this opportunity benefit you? It’s pretty straightforward that usually there’s a dollar sign attached to this question. But will it get you in the door at a large company? Will it support a mission you consider important? How about, will it be fun?
2 – What are the downsides to this opportunity? Will you have to meet tight deadlines? Work with difficult personalities?
3 – What’s the best possible outcome? Regardless of the probabilities, take a moment to dream big. Where can this opportunity take you? If that end result isn’t somewhere you want to be, then maybe this opportunity isn’t for you.
4 – What’s the worst possible outcome? Everything comes with risk but some things are riskier than others. Does this require a lot of cash up front? Do you have to hire extra personnel that you don’t otherwise need? Imagine the worst case scenario – can you take this on and still fulfill your existing obligations? If you can’t live up to your existing commitments, you’re better off passing this by. Even if it’s vastly more lucrative – your reputation matters!
5 – How does this fit into your long-term goals? This is my favorite question of all!
We all have a mission and vision for the future. How does this opportunity fit in with that? And if you don’t have a vision, then I want you to go and figure one out because we all need a big, big vision!
Often times we struggle and wait for that perfect time period. Somewhere way off in the future… maybe the summer – yes! kids are out of school. Maybe they’re away at camp… wait! everyone seems to be on vacation. Fall will be better! Oops… too much going on with back to school activities. Wait a minute now holiday is around the corner.
You see what’s happening? We don’t make time for anything.
Try holding your breath and taking a leap. What’s the worst case scenario?
Oh and if you’re waiting for a sign consider this i!
